Rehearsal SpaceOut: 2004 - 2007A band's rehearsal space is a sacred place to create. As sacred as a small concrete box with fluorescent lighting and spotty electricity can be.

This is our old space, our first space, on Denby Road in Allston. We kept it until we were touring for "Post Rock" and weren't around enough to justify the rent money.

This room went for $480 a month, which will get you a two bedroom apartment with utilities in some towns. In Boston it won't even get you a working bathroom across the hall.

We formed the band here, recorded here, and wrote most of the songs for Post Rock. The walls were no more than 4" thick, and you could hear the bands on either side like they were in the same room. Our neighbors were Cave In on one side and Jake Brennan on the other for most of our time there. Cave In's bass was often louder than our own instruments, and Jake Brennan's slide guitar player must have been the hardest working musician in Boston, because he was there every single day.

The biggest drag about this space was typical for most rehearsal rooms: no windows and little ventilation. Also, it tended to smell like the whatever food was left by the last band --- we shared with at least two at all times.

We don't miss it at all.
